Paris had been on our list for years. Nika first visited the city during high school and always said she wanted to come back one day — this time together. In March 2026, we finally made it happen.

While planning our trip, one question took surprisingly long to answer: where should we actually stay in Paris? The city looks relatively compact on the map, but once you start researching neighborhoods, it quickly becomes clear that each area offers a completely different experience. Some are romantic and quiet, others lively and central, and prices can vary quite a lot even within short walking distance.

For our visit, we decided to try two different neighborhoods — Montmartre (18th arrondissement) and the Opéra district (9th arrondissement) — spending two nights in each. Both turned out to be great choices, but for very different reasons. Montmartre felt more atmospheric and relaxed, while Opéra was incredibly convenient for getting around the city.

During the trip, we also explored other popular areas where many travelers choose to stay. Even though we didn’t spend the night in each of them, we walked through them multiple times, checked hotel locations, and got a good feel for the overall vibe, accessibility, and who they are best suited for.

Where to stay in Paris: Our experience

For our first two nights, we wanted something a bit more romantic, so Montmartre (18th arrondissement) felt like the perfect choice. While planning our Paris itinerary, we already knew we wanted to spend our first day exploring this area, so staying there made everything easier and more relaxed.

Even though Montmartre isn’t as central as some other neighborhoods in Paris, it still worked very well for getting around. Our hotel, Montmartre Paris Suite, was just a 3-minute walk from the metro, so reaching other parts of the city was simple. The area itself sits on a hill, so we expected a bit more walking, but we honestly didn’t mind — we treated it as part of the experience.

One of the highlights was being just a short walk from Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, where we enjoyed one of the best views of Paris, especially around sunset. The whole neighborhood had a very charming atmosphere, with small cafés, bakeries, quiet streets, and beautiful viewpoints almost everywhere we turned. Compared to busier parts of the city, Montmartre felt more relaxed and local, which made it a great place to start our trip.

The only small downside could be the uphill walking, which might not suit everyone, but for us it was absolutely worth it for the views and the overall vibe.

After two nights, we moved closer to the center and stayed near Palais Garnier in the Opéra district (9th arrondissement). This area felt much more lively and practical, with many of the best things to do in Paris within walking distance.

We stayed at Hôtel Chouchou, located on a quieter side street just a short walk from the metro. The location couldn’t have been more convenient — we were able to reach many places on foot, and when distances were longer, the metro connections made everything quick and easy.

Compared to Montmartre, this area felt less romantic, but much more central and efficient for exploring the city. One of our favorite nearby spots was the rooftop terrace of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, which offers fantastic views of Paris and is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

During our trip, we also spent quite a bit of time walking through Le Marais and the Latin Quarter, two areas where many travelers choose to stay. Even though we didn’t stay overnight there, we explored them enough to get a good sense of what staying there would feel like.

Le Marais felt lively and stylish, with plenty of restaurants, small boutiques, and historic streets that were very pleasant to explore on foot. It seemed like a great balance between atmosphere and central location, especially if you enjoy being close to cafés and local shops.

The Latin Quarter had a slightly more relaxed and local feel, with many casual restaurants, small streets, and easy access to landmarks like the Panthéon and Notre Dame. We also noticed that this area offers many accommodation options, often at slightly better prices than nearby Saint-Germain.

Overall, we were very happy with our decision to split our stay between two different neighborhoods, as it gave us a better understanding of how much the location can influence the overall experience in Paris.

The area felt very different from the rest of Paris — quieter in the evenings, filled with local bakeries, small cafés, and beautiful architecture around almost every corner.

The main thing to expect is uphill walking, since the neighborhood sits on a hill. Some streets include stairs, which might not be ideal with heavy luggage, but we personally didn’t mind and actually enjoyed the slower pace of this area.
