Oeschinensee in Switzerland is easy to reach by gondola, but the best views require more effort than many visitors expect.
The main decisions are whether to take the gondola or hike up from Kandersteg, and whether the Panorama Hike is suitable for your fitness and comfort with exposed mountain trails.
We have visited Oeschinensee twice and skipped the gondola both times.
Our first visit was in autumn 2022, when the landscape had already turned orange and the lake felt much quieter. We returned in summer 2026, when the meadows were green, the water looked completely different, and the warmer weather made swimming much more appealing.
On both visits, we completed the Panorama Hike above the lake. It is the part of the day we would prioritise, but it is not an easy lakeside walk and should not be underestimated.
In this guide, we share the current 2026 ticket and booking rules, both ways to reach the lake, a detailed description of the Panorama Hike, swimming and facilities, and the practical details we wish we had known before our first visit.
Where is Oeschinensee Lake
Oeschinensee Lake is located in the Berner Oberland Region, in the southwestern part of Switzerland. The closest town as well as the starting point of the hike and cable car is Kandersteg.

Is Oeschinensee Worth Visiting?
Yes, we think Oeschinensee is worth visiting, especially if you are prepared to explore beyond the busy area near the lake.
The main downside is that Oeschinensee is no longer a quiet mountain lake. The area close to the shore can feel busy, particularly during the main summer season.
However, many visitors stay near the restaurants and lakefront, so the experience improves once you continue onto the Panorama Hike.
If you only want an effortless lakeside stop, the visit may feel less impressive than the photos suggest.
But if you are comfortable with a moderately demanding mountain trail, the views from above are the main reason we would recommend coming here. We completed the Panorama Hike during both visits, and it remains the part of Oeschinensee we would prioritise.
How to get to Kandersteg
No matter how you decide to get to the lake, you will first need to get to Kandersteg.
If you have a car, you can easily get to Kandersteg by road. For example, from Interlaken, it takes 45 minutes, and from Lucern 2 hours. See our renting a car in Switzerland guide.
When driving from Brig or elsewhere in Valais, the most practical route is the BLS car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg. The journey through the Lötschberg Tunnel takes around 15 minutes.
The ticket only costs CHF 26 from Monday till Thursday and CHF 29 from Friday till Sunday and on holidays.

The best way to get to Kandersteg using public transport is by train. While direct trains are available from Bern, Spiez, and Brig, you will have to make at least 1 transfer from other locations. Check the connections either on SBB or Omio.
The walk from Kandersteg train station to the Oeschinensee gondola valley station takes around 10–15 minutes. From June to October, a local bus also connects the train station with the gondola station.
You can use the Swiss Travel Pass, Interrail / Eurail Pass, and Berner Oberland Pass (valid until Visp). You can also get a discount with a Half Fare Card.

How to get to Oeschinensee
You cannot drive directly to Oeschinensee. From Kandersteg, you can either take the gondola and continue on foot or hike all the way to the lake.
Parking: The P1–P3 car parks are located next to the gondola valley station. In 2026, parking for gondola passengers costs 9 CHF for up to four hours, 10.80 CHF for five hours, and 1.80 CHF for every additional hour.
These car parks are considerably more expensive for hikers, so if you plan to walk up, use one of the designated hiking car parks in Kandersteg instead. Parking can fill up from around 11 AM on busy summer days.
We recommend parking around the Gemeindehaus area, there are much cheaper car parks where you can use EasyPark.
Gondola Information
The gondola is the easiest way to reach the Oeschinensee area, but it does not take you directly to the lake. From the upper station, follow the wide gravel and partly paved path for approximately 20–30 minutes downhill. This route is also suitable for strollers.
On the way back to the gondola it requires a 30-minute uphill walk. If you decide to skip the gonola instead, it’s around 45-minutes downhill to Kandersteg.
To be honest, we think the cable car is not that helpful. You can hike up in 1-hour, and back down in 45 minutes if you skip it. If you don’t , you pay CHF 40, and still hike 20-minutes down and 30-minutes up.
Yes, it is definitely a bit easier with the gondola, but for us it was just not worth the money.
From June 20 to September 20, 2026, you must book a time slot for the uphill gondola journey. Only a limited number of tickets are available at the valley station, and you may not be able to board if all time slots are fully booked.

A paid electric taxi also operates between the upper gondola station and the mountain restaurant near the lake.
It usually runs every 30 minutes during the summer season, with the first journey at 10:45 AM and the final return from the lake at 5:30 PM. A ride costs 6 CHF, capacity is limited, and visitors with reduced mobility have priority.
Gondola Operating Hours
From May 9 to September 20, 2026, the gondola operates daily from 8:30 AM to 6 PM. From September 21 to November 8, it operates from 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Always check the current operating status before visiting, as mountain weather can affect services.
Gondola Ticket Prices
In 2026, an adult return ticket costs 36 CHF during the early and late season and 40 CHF during the main summer season. The Half Fare Card, GA Travelcard, and Swiss Travel Pass provide a 50% discount. Children under six travel free.
Hiking from Kandersteg
If you want to skip the gondola, there is an official trails available. It usually takes around 1 hour and ascends 450m.
The route starts with a steep climb through the forest, but the gradient becomes gentler higher up. We actually found this to be a very beautiful hike, with open views over the Kandersteg Valley and several waterfalls along the way. More details below
We hiked up and down on both of our visits. It adds a substantial climb before the Panorama Hike, but for fit hikers, we think it is a much better-value option than paying for the gondola.
Activities at Oeschinensee Lake
Enjoy the views
Oeschinen Lake is probably the most beautiful one we’ve seen in the Swiss Alps. Its incredible turquoise color is mind-blowing, especially during sunny days. Enormous tall mountains behind provide a spectacular backdrop.
Thanks to the beautiful scenery and social media, this place has become quite famous and it’s visited by many tourists each day. So if you wish to enjoy your time here and avoid the crowds, we recommend coming early in the morning.
Swim in the lake
Yes, swimming is allowed at Oeschinensee. The water is usually cold, but during warm summer periods, it can reach around 20°C.
When we returned in summer, we actually enjoyed swimming here after the Panorama hike. We personally loved the small beach (location) where you can also find a public toilet.
Try Swiss food in mountain huts
With a few mountain huts to choose from, why not enjoy a lunch with lake views? You can choose from a large selection of different local meals or just stop for a coffee and a cake. Around lunch time, the restaurants on the shore get pretty crowded.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the food is slightly more expensive by the lake. Apart from a few mountain huts right on the shore, you’ll also find a few more above the lake, offering stunning views.
Rent a rowboat
If the water is too cold for swimming, renting a rowing boat is one of the best ways to see the lake from a different perspective. The rental stand is located by the blue boats on the lakeshore.
In 2026, the rental costs CHF 40 per boat for one hour, with space for up to four people. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, while children under 12 must wear a life jacket.
The boat rental normally operates from May during suitable weather. It closes during fog, strong winds, and thunderstorms, so check the live operating status before relying on it. Keep at least 100 metres away from the rock faces because of the risk of falling rocks.
Summer Toboggan Run in Kandersteg – Mountain Coaster
The 750-metre mountain coaster is located next to the upper gondola station. You control the speed yourself, making it suitable even if you do not want a particularly fast ride.
In 2026, one ride costs CHF 6 before 1 PM and CHF 7 after 1 PM. Children under eight ride free, but the minimum age is three, and younger children must ride with an accompanying adult. Tickets are sold only at the machine beside the coaster.
The coaster operates during the summer in dry, suitable conditions and closes when the track is wet. Check the live status before visiting specifically for this activity.
Enjoy a barbecue
Looking for another idea? How about grilling your food at one of many barbecue stations around? They’re all free to use and offer amazing views! However, you won’t find much wood around. So if you decide to grill, either bring your own wood or buy a barbecue bag at the mountain huts.

Hiking at Oeschinen Lake – the Panorama Hike
By far one of the best things you can do at Oeschinensee. We can’t recommend this trail highly enough. It offers a completely different perspective and views from above. Therefore, if you have time and energy for the hike, definitely go for it!
Apart from Panorama Hike, you’ll find a few more hiking trails in the area. The most difficult one takes you to a Fründenhütten SAC. While a it’s not an official via ferrata, a via ferrata set is recommended since it’s a technically difficult hike.
How to Hike the Panorama Hike
Hike distance: 8.5 km
Elevation gain: 430 m
Hike duration: 3.5 h (no stop)
Difficulty: medium (exposed)
Which Direction to Hike?
The Panorama Hike is a loop and can be completed in either direction.
The commonly described clockwise route starts near the gondola station and climbs towards Läger and Heuberg. The lake is not visible immediately, but the views begin to open up after the initial ascent.
Later, you descend the steep and partly secured section between Oberbärgli and Unterbärgli before returning along the lake.
We completed the trail anti-clockwise on both visits. In this direction, you first walk down to Oeschinensee (if you took gondola) and follow the gentler trail towards Unterbärgli. The climb from Unterbärgli to Oberbärgli is then one of the steepest parts of the hike, but we preferred climbing this secured rocky section rather than descending it.
Neither direction is easy throughout. Clockwise puts most of the initial ascent near the beginning, while anti-clockwise finishes with the exposed descent from Heuberg towards the gondola station.
Oeschinensee – Unterbärgli
If you start the trail from the upper cable car station, you can first walk towards Oeschinensee. We hiked up from the parking lot, so we ended up right by the Mountain Hotel Oeschinensee.
The section to Unterbärgli starts with a short walk through the forest with many views of the lake from above.
Soon we got to an incredibly beautiful panoramic section with a narrow gravel path. On the left side we had enormously tall cliff faces, while on the right side, there was a steep slope.
The path is narrow, with steep slopes below in several places. It is not technically difficult in dry conditions, but it is exposed enough that we would not recommend it to anyone uncomfortable with heights.
In most of this section, the incline is already noticeable.
We got to a more spacious alpine meadow with a trail that looked like from Hobbit. We could already see the Unterbärgli, which was just a short climb away. We met a few grazing cows in this area, as it’s part of a farm.
Unterbärgli to Oberbärgli Trek
From Unterbärgli to Oberbärgli the trail gets steeper. The whole climb will take between 20 – 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.
The views only get better and better as you get closer to Oberbärgli. Once you arrive at the mountain hut, you’ll be rewarded with the most incredible views of Oeschinen Lake. But it’s not the end yet, the most beautiful section is still ahead of us.
This section is not too exposed, with a wider path and cables to hold onto.
Oberbärgli to Kandersteg Cable Car
Okay, so this is by far the best section of the whole Panorama hike. As we departed the Oberbärgli hut, the views kept leaving us in awe. You walk along the Alpine meadows, traverse steep hills, and see a few smaller waterfalls and water streams along the way.
We found a few different viewpoints along the trail, where we certainly recommend taking a break to enjoy the views.
This section definitely is the most exposed, with a few very narrow paths and steep drop-offs on the side. If you have serious fear of heights, we wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Experienced children may be able to complete the hike, but we would not describe it as a general family trail. We did meet a few families with kids, though.
The last section is a decline. Once you get down, you can choose to either go to the lake, cable car station or hike down to the parking lot.
Check the official trail status before starting. Snow can remain in gullies in early summer, and wind, rain or wet ground make the exposed sections significantly more difficult. Stay on the marked route and respect all barriers and rockfall restrictions.
Oeschinensee Hike: Map & Plan
Facilities at Oeschinensee
The main facilities are concentrated around the upper gondola station and the lakeshore. You will find several restaurants and snack stands, public toilets, lockers at both gondola stations, rowing boat rental, and designated barbecue areas.
Public toilets are available at the valley and upper gondola stations and near Bergrestaurant Oeschinensee on the lakeshore. Facilities become much more limited once you continue onto the Panorama Hike, so use the toilets before starting and carry enough water with you.
Where to Eat
- Bergstübli – A self-service restaurant and kiosk directly beside the upper gondola station, serving meals, snacks, cakes, and drinks.
- Bergrestaurant Oeschinensee – The main self-service restaurant on the lakeshore, with warm meals and a large terrace.
- Café-Bar Oeschinensee – A casual option by the lake for drinks, snacks, fries, sausages, and ice cream.
- Chalet Arva – A smaller restaurant with a serviced terrace close to the lake. Opening days vary during the season.
- Restaurant Zur Sennhütte – A seasonal restaurant above the lake that opens only in suitable weather.
- Underbärgli – A simple seasonal mountain hut on the Panorama Hike offering drinks and light snacks while supplies last. It accepts cash only, and its toilets are reserved for customers.
Opening days depend on the season and weather, particularly at the smaller mountain huts. Check the live operating status before planning to eat at a specific place.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Oeschinensee for hiking is generally from late June to September. This is when the Panorama Hike is most likely to be free of snow and the main summer activities are operating.
July and August offer the warmest conditions and are the best months for swimming and rowing boats. However, they are also the busiest.
Late September and early October can be an excellent alternative if the weather remains stable. The area is usually quieter and the autumn colours make the landscape look completely different.
Oeschinensee can also be visited in winter, but the experience is completely different. Summer mountain trails, including the Panorama Hike, are not winter hiking routes.
Always check the live trail status and weather forecast on the morning of your hike.
Daywise, we recommend coming as early as possible. We came early in the morning and did the Panorama hike. When we returned after the hike, which was late afternoon, we couldn’t believe how crowded it was.
Where to Stay
We stayed at Gemmi Hotel & SPA and loved the mountain views, the very spacious apartment, and the genuinely tasty breakfast with a wide selection.
Having Gemmi Taverne right next door was another highlight. It was our favorite place to stop in the evening thanks to its lively atmosphere, regular events, and simple food that tasted so good after a day outside.
The hotel also provides a free shuttle, which made our visit to Oeschinensee much easier. We could leave the car behind and avoid the parking stress, which is a big advantage during busy periods.

FAQs
The Panorama Hike is not a general family walk. It has narrow, exposed sections and requires good stamina, sure-footedness, and confidence on mountain trails.
Mountain-experienced children may be able to complete it with close supervision, but we would not recommend choosing the route based only on age. Consider the child’s previous hiking experience and comfort with steep drops instead.
Families with younger children can still visit Oeschinensee by taking the gondola and following the wide path to the lake, which is also suitable for strollers.
No, you cannot fly your drone around Oeschinensee.
Yes, dogs are allowed, including on the gondola. They must be kept on a leash, particularly around grazing animals, wildlife protection areas, and nature reserves.
In 2026, a day ticket for a dog on the gondola costs CHF 8. The SBB Dog Pass is also accepted.
No, camping, bivouacking, or sleeping in a hammock are not allowed due to many restrictions according to outdoor guidelines. You’ll find a camp at the lower cable car station.
Final Thoughts
Oeschinensee is worth visiting, but the experience is much better if you go beyond the busy lakeshore. The Panorama Hike is what makes the day memorable, with far better views than you get from the restaurants and main paths below.
For fit hikers, we would skip the gondola and walk up from Kandersteg. It saves money, adds a beautiful valley hike to the day, and the time saved by taking the gondola is smaller than it first appears. The gondola still makes sense if you want to conserve energy, are travelling with a stroller, or are not comfortable with a steep climb.
Plan most of the day, check the trail conditions before starting, and do not underestimate the exposed sections of the Panorama Hike. With enough time and suitable weather, Oeschinensee remains one of the Swiss mountain lakes we would happily return to.
