The best time to visit any part of Sri Lanka is during the shoulder seasons in April and September / October. The weather is mostly dry and sunny, with occasional downpours.

Dry season

When planning to visit Weligama, Ella, or Mirissa, the best period is between December and March. These months are also best for animal spotting. It's the best time for beach bumming and surfing.

The North and East experience the Maha monsoon at this time. The dry season comes here between May and August. It's the best time to visit Jaffna and Arugam Bay.

Rainy season

Between May and August, the South and West are hit by the Yala monsoon. Expect lots of rainy and uncalm seas. North and East Sri Lanka have a rainy season between December and March.
