Crans-Montana in Switzerland has a surprisingly varied mix of hikes, from gentle walks beside traditional irrigation channels to higher mountain trails reached by cable car. The distances may look manageable on paper, but the terrain, exposure and overall experience can be very different.
During our stay, we hiked Bisse du Ro, Bisse du Tsittoret and the Marmot Trail, and we also visited several of the lakes included in the easy Crans-Montana Lakes Walk. Each one suits a different type of day, whether you want dramatic exposed sections, waterfalls, wildlife or a simple walk with minimal elevation.
In this guide, we’ll help you compare the best hikes in Crans-Montana based on difficulty, scenery, time and who each trail is best for, with links to our detailed hiking guides where you can find the full route and practical information.

If we had to choose: Bisse du Ro offers the most dramatic experience, Bisse du Tsittoret has the best mix of waterfalls and mountain scenery, and the Marmot Trail is the easiest proper mountain hike for families. Choose the Lakes Walk when you want a gentle day close to the resort.
The Bisse du Tsittoret figures refer to the complete official route from Vermala to Colombire. We hiked a shorter version starting near Colombire, which we explain below.

4 Best Hikes in Crans-Montana

1. Bisse du Ro
Distance: 9.1 km
Duration: 3 hours of walking
Elevation: 130 m up, 340 m down
Difficulty: Easy to moderate physically, but highly exposed
Best for: Dramatic cliffside scenery and unusual trails
Bisse du Ro is the most dramatic hike on this list. Instead of climbing towards a summit, the trail follows a historic irrigation channel along steep rock faces, crossing wooden walkways, small bridges and several waterfalls with wide views over the Rhône Valley.

We hiked from Plans-Mayens to the suspension bridge and returned the same way. This shorter option already includes the most exposed and memorable sections, while the complete route continues towards Lac de Tseuzier.
The trail was well maintained and most narrow sections had railings, but the steep drops can still feel uncomfortable if you are afraid of heights. We’d choose this hike for the most unusual scenery, but skip it if you want a relaxed trail without exposure.

2. Bisse du Tsittoret
Distance: 10.7 km official route / 6.6 km shorter route
Duration: 3 hr 20 min / around 2 hours
Elevation: +365 m, -239 m / +150 m, -171 m
Difficulty: Moderate / easy
Best for: Waterfalls, varied scenery and a gentler half-day hike
Bisse du Tsittoret was our favorite hike in Crans-Montana because it offers an impressive mix of scenery without feeling demanding. The trail passes through shaded forest, follows alpine streams and opens into flower-filled meadows with distant mountain views.

The main highlight is the Tièche Valley, where the route passes several smaller waterfalls before reaching the large La Tièche waterfall. You can walk surprisingly close to it, and the surrounding meadows made this one of our favorite places in the region.
We started at Cave de Colombire instead of completing the entire official route from Vermala. This shorter version saved almost 4 km and around 1.5 hours while still including what we found to be the most scenic part of the hike.
We’d choose this trail if you want a relaxed but varied mountain walk.

3. Marmot Trail
Distance: 2.3 km
Duration: Around 1 hour
Elevation: +67 m, -110 m
Difficulty: Easy
Best for: Families, mountain views and possible marmot sightings
The Marmot Trail is the easiest mountain hike on this list and a good choice if you want high-altitude scenery without a long or demanding route. It connects Cry d’Er with Cabane des Violettes along a narrow, rocky path overlooking the surrounding peaks and valley.
We hiked it with our one-year-old daughter in a carrier. The trail was never exposed or particularly difficult, although there is a short chain and metal ladder near the end, and the uneven surface makes it unsuitable for a stroller.

We heard marmots during the hike but did not manage to see any. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the wide mountain views made the trail worth doing even without them.
You can finish at Cabane des Violettes and descend by cable car or continue towards Merbé for a longer hike. We’d choose this trail for an easy family-friendly mountain walk rather than for a full hiking day.

4. Crans-Montana Lakes Walk
Distance: 13.2 km
Duration: Around 3 hours 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Best for: A relaxed walk, families and days without cable cars
The Crans-Montana Lakes Walk is the easiest and most flexible option on this list. The official loop starts and finishes at Scandia and connects lakes and ponds spread across the plateau, with no technical terrain or demanding mountain sections.
We visited several of the lakes during our stay but did not complete the entire loop ourselves. The route passes through both built-up parts of the resort and quieter green areas, so it feels more like a relaxed walking day than a traditional mountain hike.

The full loop is fairly long despite its easy rating, but you do not need to complete all 13.2 km. Five of the main lakes lie within the heart of the resort and can be combined into a shorter walk of around 10 km, or you can simply choose a few depending on where you are staying.
We’d choose this route if you want an easy, low-stress walk or are visiting with children. Skip it if you want remote mountain scenery, waterfalls or a trail that feels more adventurous.
Best Time to Hike in Crans-Montana
The most reliable time for hiking in Crans-Montana is generally from July to September, when more cable cars, mountain huts and higher-altitude trails are usually open.
We visited during the second half of June and found that the summer hiking season was still only beginning. Just one cable car was operating, several trails remained closed and not all mountain huts had opened yet.
June can be a beautiful time for flowing waterfalls and Alpine flowers, especially on lower bisse trails, but we would not rely on having access to every mountain route. Check current trail conditions, cable-car schedules and hut opening dates before planning your hikes.
July and August offer the widest choice of open routes, although they are also the busiest months. September is usually quieter and still works well for hiking, but some lifts and huts begin reducing their schedules later in the season.

Where to stay in Crans-Montana
These are the three hotels we’d consider, depending on whether you want the best overall experience, direct mountain access, or a more affordable stay.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Boutique Hotel Panorama — Our Top Pick

We stayed at Boutique Hotel Panorama and would happily recommend it for a hiking trip to Crans-Montana.
The hotel overlooks the Rhône Valley and surrounding mountains, and the terrace quickly became our favorite place to watch the sunset. The panoramic setting is the main reason we would choose it over the other options.
We stayed in a spacious two-bedroom apartment, which worked particularly well for us when traveling with Ema. Having separate bedrooms gave us much more comfort than a standard hotel room.
The hotel also has a spa and fitness area, which was ideal after a day of hiking. We ate at the on-site restaurant as well, and the food was genuinely delicious.
Best for: Families, panoramic views, sunset evenings and extra space after hiking

⭐️⭐️ Hotel-Restaurant Le Mont Paisible
We’d choose Le Mont Paisible if you want a quieter mountain stay with more than just a convenient location. The hotel has panoramic views over the Rhône Valley, an on-site restaurant, a sauna, massages on request, and free parking. The Violettes cable car is also only a few steps away, making it easy to reach the mountains without driving across the resort.
Best for: Mountain views, useful facilities, and easy cable-car access

⭐️ Hôtel Historique Chez Elsy
Chez Elsy stands out for its personal atmosphere and original 1960s character. The same family has run the hotel for three generations, and the rooms combine vintage details with modern comforts. Some also have balconies with panoramic mountain views, while the restaurant and terrace give you somewhere relaxed to eat or have a drink without leaving the hotel.
It is also usually the most affordable of our three picks, making it a strong choice if you want character, views, and a smaller family-run stay.
Best for: A personal, character-filled stay at a lower price

FAQ
We would choose the Marmot Trail for families comfortable using a child carrier. It is short and not exposed, although the rocky surface and a small ladder near the end make it unsuitable for strollers.
Bisse du Tsittoret is relatively gentle, especially if you follow the shorter route from Colombire. Bisse du Ro is not particularly strenuous, but its narrow paths and steep drops make it more challenging for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
Yes. Several trails can be reached by local buses or cable cars, and the Lakes Walk starts within the resort. However, summer transport schedules vary, so check connections and lift operations before choosing your route.
Final Thoughts
Crans-Montana is a good hiking base if you want variety without committing to long, technical mountain routes. Bisse du Ro offers the most dramatic experience, while Bisse du Tsittoret was our favourite overall for its waterfalls, Alpine meadows and relaxed pace.
For an easier mountain walk, we’d choose the Marmot Trail, especially with children in a carrier. The Lakes Walk makes more sense when you want a flexible route close to the resort without relying on cable cars.
If we had time for only one hike, we would choose Bisse du Tsittoret. It gives you the best balance of scenery, variety and difficulty, without the exposed sections found on Bisse du Ro.
