Mirissa was one of our favorite cities on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. People usually visit popular places like Mirissa Beach, Parrot Rock, or Coconut Tree Hill. These places will leave you in awe.
However, the places mentioned above are far from all that you can see in Mirissa. Not every traveler knows about Secret Beach Mirissa, which is a wonderful hidden gem. You simply have to add this place to your Sri Lanka itinerary and see all the beauty it offers through your own eyes.
After exploring Sri Lanka’s highlands, riding the most beautiful Colombo to Ella train, swimming in infinity pools at Diyaluma Falls, and visiting the Udawalawe National Park, we couldn’t wait to enjoy some time on the beach. And Secret Beach was a dream come true!
Where is Secret Beach?
It’s nestled on the west side of Mirissa Harbor, along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This place is only a short distance from the main Mirissa beach. You can also save the beach location to your Google Maps app.

Navigate to the beach via Google Maps. The road might look like it’s going nowhere but follow the path until you reach the destination.
Renting a motorbike
Renting a motorbike is the most convenient option, with a daily rental fee of around 1500 LKR. In case you want to visit the beach by motorbike, include other beautiful places in your day trip you would like to see to make the most of your motorbike rental.
Although renting a motorbike in Mirissa might be a little bit difficult. Most of the motorbike rentals are located in Weligama.
Tuk-tuk
Tuk-tuk is generally more expensive than renting a motorbike but in this case, it’s the opposite or equal. Please note that it’s hard to access Secret Beach on tuk-tuk.
The end of the road is in bad condition, it’s steep and also unpaved. They will drop you on the main harbor road, from where you have to walk for a couple of minutes. Tuk-tuk drivers will offer you a drop-off at the beach but it will be very expensive.
Bus
If you are on a budget, going there by public bus is the cheapest and the best option. In case you’re staying in Weligama or surrounding villages, look for a bus stands located on a main road.
We usually used the buses because they were quite frequent, fast and saved us a lot of money. For example, we paid just a few cents for a ride from Weligama to Mirissa.
Private car
You can also reach Secret Beach Mirissa by private car. However, this option is suitable for groups or families with kids exploring Sri Lanka. The only downside is that you can rent a car only in Colombo.

About Secret Beach Mirissa
Parking fee: free
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the view of a golden sand surrounded by palm trees. In fact, Secret Beach consists of two beaches that are connected.
The first one you’ll see has great access to the sea. There aren’t any rocks blocking your way. Therefore you can enjoy swimming and snorkeling without any problems.
In addition, the waters boast diverse marine life. If you go for a swim, take your snorkeling gear as you can spot a sea turtle. There is also a chance you’ll see a baby shark if you are lucky.
Don’t be afraid, they are harmless. However, there are sea urchins at the bottom of the sea. After all, you don’t want to step on them with bare feet.
You will also have many sunbeds at your disposal that you can rent for the whole day at a reasonable price. On the beach, you can even find a swing that is hung on a tree. You can use it free of charge and take as many pictures as possible. It’s a wonderful spot.
Lagoon beach
As you walk along the first beach just a few meters you’ll see the second beach. There is a small blue lagoon surrounded by rocks. It looks more secluded. Access to the sea is certainly not as pleasant as on the first one.
Many sharp rocks are at the bottom of the sea, and maybe some sea urchins too. Be careful where you step. During a low tide, the water is too shallow for swimming. The rocks that surround the Secret Beach are huge, making it almost impossible to leave the lagoon.
Sunbeds are also available. You can also find a beach bar right behind the sunbeds. Grab some drinks or snacks, lay on the sunbeds, and enjoy the vibe of pure tropical paradise.
If you feel like the sun is too strong for you, don’t hesitate and hide under the palm trees. There is certainly enough space in the shade for many people.
Beach facilities
At the beach you’ll find only one family-run restaurant. They have a simple menu offering a few dishes and drinks. Owners are friendly and the food they make is tasty and cheap. You can also rent a sunbed to have a comfy experience.
You can find toilets in the restaurant. Showers are not available at the Secret Beach. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen with you since there aren’t any shops around. If you won’t bring your snorkeling gear it’s fine. It will be available for rent at the beach for a good price.
Best restaurants around the beach
In the surrounding area of Secret Beach, you’ll find just a few restaurants. If you want to enjoy tasty food at affordable prices and a stunning view of the sea, visit Divine in Mirissa restaurant.
This is the best-reviewed restaurant nearest. You can enjoy a pleasant evening with background music while watching an epic sunset.
If you won’t like Divine in Mirissa restaurant, also check other restaurants at Mirissa Beach. Keep in mind that they are not as close as Divine in Mirissa restaurant. You can expect higher prices for food and drinks since it’s a more touristy place.

Weligama Beach is undeniably a must-visit place for every traveler. The beach is well known for its long stretch of golden sand, and excellent surfing conditions. It’s a perfect spot for beginners and also for experienced surfers.
Sandy bottom of the sea is ideal for beginners. If they fall off from the surf, they don’t cut their feet on the sharp reef. Surf rental prices are very cheap. We paid only 300 LKR for one hour. Don’t forget to visit Hangten Rooftop Restaurant. The views, food, vibes, and coffee are awesome!
Bonus tip: If you’re craving more stunning sandy shores, be sure to visit the beautiful beaches of Unawatuna.
Parrot Rock
Parrot Rock offers breathtaking views of Mirissa Beach and Coconut Tree Hill in the distance. It is accessible by a narrow sandy path.
Crossing from the beach might be challenging due to crashing waves. Getting to the top of the rock is easier during a low tide. But if you take your shoes off, you’ll be fine.
Parrot rock is especially captivating during sunset when the sky turns pink and orange as the sun sets on the horizon. Despite its adventurous access, it is perfectly located only 10 minutes away from Mirissa’s main town. Therefore it’s a popular destination for people exploring Mirissa.
