Karang Boma Cliff – The Best Viewpoint in Uluwatu, Bali

Bali is home to many incredible beaches, waterfalls, rice fields, volcanoes, and viewpoints.

Karang Boma Cliff in Uluwatu is by far the best viewpoint on the island. Before visiting Bali, we knew about this spot from our friends’ Instagram stories.

The viewpoint absolutely blew our minds, so we immediately added it to our Bali itinerary. We needed to witness the sunset firsthand and believe us, this place didn’t disappoint.

Believe us, you won’t want to miss visiting Karang Boma Cliff. Also, don’t forget to visit Nyang Nyang Beach, which is right next to the cliff and one of the best beaches in Uluwatu.

Quick Overview

The best time of day to visit Karang Boma Cliff is the most important thing to consider. To fully enjoy this place, we highly recommend coming before sunset.

You’ll need to pay a parking and entrance fee. It’s not much and you’ll help the locals that keeps this place clean. At the entrance you can also buy snacks, drinks and food.

Come a little earlier to reach the viewpoint from the parking. Take out your camera or phone because a few views are already on the way.

The walk takes just a few minutes and it’s around 500 meters. Please be careful because there aren’t handrails.

Flying a drone is allowed, but be cautious because the winds are pretty strong. We almost lost our drone while flying over the sea.

Where is Karang Boma Cliff

Karang Boma Cliff is located in the southern part of Uluwatu. It’s between Nyang Nyang Beach and an amphitheater for the famous Balinese Kecak dance.

How to get there

Karang Boma Cliff is pinned in Google Maps, so you won’t have problems getting there. The first half of the road is paved and made of bricks, while the second part is unpaved and full of holes.

It’s suitable for both scooters and cars. If you’re not an experienced driver, go slowly on the unpaved road, and you’ll be fine.

Motorbike or private driver

Since we love riding scooters, we always rent one. It’s the most convenient and cheapest way to get around Bali. But if you don’t know how to ride a scooter or you’re traveling with a family, you can always hire a private driver.

Hire Gojek driver

This option is for people that don’t want to rent a scooter or hire a private driver. Gojek drivers are easily accessible in Bali and Uluwatu. It’s also cheap and reliable way of transportation on the island.

Tour

There aren’t any group tours visiting the cliff, therefore you need to get there on your own.

Entrance and parking fees

We left our scooter on the big parking lot run by locals. Then we paid for the parking and entrance at the small wooden stall.

If you forgot to buy snacks or drinks, you can buy them here. They also make some food but expect nothing special. They keep it simple.

In addition, they charge 100,000 IDR for flying a drone, which is insane. We decided not to pay, and we flew our drone anyway and had no problems.

It seems they want to make extra money, but paying for this sounds ridiculous. Please make your own opinions and decide whether to pay.

What to expect at Karang Boma Cliff

After paying for the entrance and parking, we continued walking on the dirt trail to Karang Boma Cliff. On the way, we stopped a few times to admire the beautiful viewpoints over the sea and massive cliffs.

We continued walking after soaking up the vibes and taking a few pictures (one of our favorites from Uluwatu).

After a few minutes, we arrived at our destination: the Karang Boma Cliff viewpoint. Since this place is not yet famous, we could enjoy the sunset without the crowds. It was just us and a few more people waiting to witness a fantastic sunset.

The viewpoint area isn’t secured with handrails or anything that can prevent you from falling down the cliff. Therefore, please be very careful while standing on the edge and taking pictures.

When standing on the edge of the viewpoint, you can see another cliff on the left side, just a few meters away. We saw signs on the fence stating that it was prohibited to go there.

This is probably because it’s very dangerous to stand there.

We truly enjoyed watching one of the best sunsets we witnessed during our Bali trip. It was a calm evening filled with pure happiness, and hopefully, you will have the same experience as we had.

Photography tips

The cliff and its surroundings are among the most stunning Bali coastline locations, perfect for capturing breathtaking photos, especially from drones. You should certainly bring yours. However, be very careful while flying because the winds might get strong.

We almost lost our drone while trying to fly over the sea to capture some shots. The winds pushed the drone, making it tough to come back.

Timing is critical, so shoot for the best lighting and dramatic sky at sunrise or sunset. Position the cliff or horizon along the thirds to add balance, and remember to bring your tripod.

Best restaurants around

Warung TG: Conveniently located directly on the main road, right next to the turn leading to Karang Boma Cliff. Run by friendly owner Amie who makes sure you get a tasty meal made of fresh ingredients.

Loca Warung: This warung is close to Warung TG and serves delicious food at affordable prices. The staff is friendly and polite. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Both warungs are the highest-rated restaurants close to Boma Cliff.

Three Steps Coffee is located very close to another turn leading to the cliff. It was our favorite restaurant in Uluwatu. The food selection is pretty big, and the portions are large. They also have fantastic coffee and ice cream! We loved the vibes.

Other things to do in the area

Uluwatu Temple and Kecak dance

As mentioned earlier in this post, the Kecak dance performance is in the amphitheater, close to the viewpoint. It’s one of the most famous events in Uluwatu, and thousands of people enjoy the spectacular moves of Balinese people.

Apart from the Kecak dance, you can also explore Uluwatu Temple, perched directly on the cliff. The best time to visit the temple is early morning or before sunset. If you want to avoid the crowds, come around 8 am.

Nyang Nyang Beach

Nyang Nyang is the closest beach. It’s one of the biggest beaches in Uluwatu, but it’s not as developed as Padang Padang or Melasti Beach. The beach is perfect for experienced surfers.

The best time to swim is during mid-tide when the water isn’t too shallow, and the waves are manageable. There are a few warungs, but none of them sell food; they sell cold drinks, beer, and coconuts.

Explore other popular beaches on the west coast

Almost all the best beaches in Uluwatu are on the west coast. Many of them are close to each other, so you can visit a few in one day if you’re short on time.

Our favorite beach for surfing was Pagang Padang, but the most beautiful was Dreamland. We also recommend visiting Suluban Beach, Thomas Beach, and Bingin Beach.

Best time to visit Bali

The best time to visit Bali mostly depends on your preferences. Each season has something to offer and shows a different side of the country.

Dry season

In general, the best time to visit is the dry season. Days are mostly sunny with clear skies, and there might be occasional rains. During peak months, it can get unbearably hot and humid. It’s also the most popular season, so expect higher prices and crowds.

Rainy season

The most intense rains come in December and January. Storms during the rest of the rainy season are usually short and intense. Because of this, you can have a good time even during the rainy season. But prepare for occasional floods.
