There are days in the Dolomites that feel almost too perfect — blue skies, dramatic peaks, and trails that make you stop every few minutes to enjoy the views. That’s exactly how our day around Sass de Putia unfolded.

We hadn’t even planned to hike here. We suddenly found ourselves with a free afternoon, looked at the map, and decided to give it a try. Honestly, we didn’t expect much. But it quickly turned into one of our favorite hikes in the Dolomites.

What we loved most is how the scenery keeps changing throughout the hike. It’s also not too demanding. There’s only one proper section with elevation gain, and the rest is a steady, enjoyable walk with nonstop views of Sass de Putia towering above you.

It’s ideal if you want a rewarding alpine experience without committing to an all-day, exhausting climb.

In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know about visiting Sass de Putia — what to expect on the trail, who it’s perfect for, and how to plan your time based on our experience.

Why we think this hike is worth it?

The loop around Sass de Putia delivers huge Dolomite scenery without requiring too much energy. You’re constantly walking beneath this massive, dramatic peak. Aside from one steady uphill section, it’s mostly gradual and comfortable.

It’s the kind of hike where you can actually enjoy the views instead of just focusing on your breathing.

What really made it special for us was the variety. Open alpine meadows, dramatic rock faces, distant mountain ranges and a few mountain huts to enjoy some snacks and drinks.

On a sunny day (like we had), the contrast between the green pastures and the pale rock of Sass de Putia is unreal.

It’s not the most famous hike in the region — and honestly, that’s part of why we liked it so much. Fewer crowds, but views that absolutely deliver.

When to hike Sass de Putia

If you can, start early in the morning. The trail is exposed in sections, so midday sun can feel intense in summer.

Late afternoon can also work well, especially for photography. The warm light hitting Sass de Putia gives the rock a beautiful golden tone. Just make sure you allow enough time to finish before sunset, especially in shoulder season.

The trail is at its best from late June till early October. Each year can be different and snow can still linger in some parts in the spring. The same applies when hiking in late autumn.

Getting to the trailhead

The Sass de Putia loop starts at Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch) — a scenic mountain pass.

By Car (Most Practical Option)

This is how we did it — and honestly, it’s the easiest and most flexible way.

We arrived with our own car and highly recommend doing the same, especially if you’re exploring multiple areas in the Dolomites. For rentals, we always compare prices on DiscoverCars, which has worked well for us across different countries.

The drive itself is beautiful but includes narrow mountain roads with tight turns, especially on the final stretch. Take it slow and you’ll be fine.

Parking

There are several paid parking areas at Passo delle Erbe, including the main lot near Ütia de Börz (Utia de Putia) where most hikers start the loop.

We paid 8€ for the whole day, which is reasonable for a full mountain hike in this region. There was a guy collecting the fee and payment was only possible in cash.

By Public Transport

It’s possible, but it requires more planning and flexibility. The nearest train stations are Chiusa / Klausen, Bressanone / Brixen, Brunico / Bruneck or San Lorenzo / St. Lorenzen.

From these towns, you’ll need to connect to regional buses heading toward Passo delle Erbe. Bus lines that pass through are 339, 323 and 469.

Schedules vary by season, and service is more limited outside peak summer months. Make sure to check current timetables in advance and plan your return connection carefully — you don’t want to miss the last bus down from the pass.

Duration: 5 hours

Passo delle Erbe to Fornella Hut (25 minutes)

This first section is the easiest part of the entire hike — and honestly, such a pleasant way to start.

The trail follows a wide gravel road that also serves as a cycling path, so the surface only has a little elevation and feels comfortable. Right from the beginning, we had Sass de Putia towering directly in front of us, and it barely left our view during this stretch.

Behind us and to the sides, we could already spot distant snowy peaks framing the horizon.

At one point, we noticed a deep, unusual hollow in the landscape — almost like a crater carved into the meadows. The trail passes wide alpine pastures dotted with a few wooden huts, giving it that classic Dolomites postcard feel.

Just before reaching Fornella Hut, we turned right to officially begin the loop around the massif.

Fornella Hut to Forcella de Putia (1.5 hours)

For the first few minutes after Fornella, the trail continues gently along a wide gravel path with minimal elevation. It still feels relaxed — but that changes soon enough.

The steady uphill climb begins gradually, and you definitely feel it building. Some sections become narrower with steeper drop-offs on the sides. Nothing technical or dangerous in dry conditions, but this part does require steady footing and a bit of confidence with heights.

As we gained elevation, the climb became more demanding. The final stretch before Forcella de Putia is a narrow zigzag through a couloir, and this is where we were properly breathing hard. It’s not long — but it’s the toughest part of the loop.

Reaching Forcella de Putia felt incredibly rewarding. Suddenly, the landscape opened up into rolling alpine meadows scattered with wooden houses and dramatic peaks in every direction. To the left, Sass de Putia rised above us to 2,875 meters.

If you’re up for an extra challenge, you can continue from here to summit Sass de Putia itself. That extension adds roughly 3–4 additional hours and turns it into a much more demanding day.

Forcella de Putia to Ütia Vaciara (1 hour 10 minutes)

This was our favorite section of the entire hike.

From the forcella, the trail descends gently through open meadows, zigzagging down in a way that feels easy on the knees. After the climb, it was such a relief to simply walk and enjoy the scenery without constantly catching our breath.

You’re essentially circling the massif from its side now, and the views are nonstop. Wide alpine pastures stretch out in front of you, with the dramatic rock walls of Sass de Putia rising to your left.

Almost right before rounding the massif completely, we reached Ütia Vaciara — and this is hands down the best food stop of the day. We weren’t expecting much, but the food was genuinely delicious. We’d happily stop here again.

Card payments were possible during our visit, which was convenient.

Ütia Vaciara to Ütja de Goma (1 hour)

With full bellies, we continued along the loop.

This section continues wrapping around the massif, and the scenery keeps subtly changing — from open meadows to rockier sections and eventually toward Gömajoch.

After Gömajoch, the path leads into the forest and gradually downhill. For a while, the wide mountain views disappeared.

We soon reached Ütja de Göma, which was already closed during our visit. Even so, the setting is beautiful, with lovely views opening up again near the hut.

Ütja de Goma to Passo Delle Erbe (1 hour)

The final stretch is fairly easy and mostly flat.

You walk through forested sections mixed with open meadows, and it feels like a relaxed cooldown after a full mountain loop. As we approached the Fornella area again, the views started opening up toward Sass de Putia.

Fornella Hut was lively when we passed by — full of families, kids playing in the sunshine, and people enjoying the terrace. It had such a warm, welcoming atmosphere that it felt like the perfect ending to the hike.

From there, it’s just a short, easy walk back to the parking area at Passo delle Erbe — tired, but very glad we decided to hike Sass de Putia that day.

Facilities on the trail

One thing we really liked about this hike is that there are several mountain huts along the route, so you’re never too far from a place to rest, grab a drink, or enjoy a proper meal.

Here are the main huts you’ll encounter along the Sass de Putia loop:

  • Ütia Cir – Located near the start of the trail around Passo delle Erbe, a convenient place for a quick coffee or snack before beginning the hike.
  • Fornella Hut (Rifugio Fornella) – One of the first huts you’ll pass on the trail. It’s located in beautiful open meadows and often lively with hikers and families enjoying the terrace.
  • Peitler Hütte (Rifugio Peitler) – Situated near the Fornella Hut.
  • Ütia Vaciara – Our favorite stop on the entire hike. The food here was genuinely excellent during our visit, and it’s a perfect place to recharge before continuing the loop.
  • Ütja de Göma – Located on the later section of the trail as you descend through the forest. It was closed when we passed by, but the setting is beautiful and normally a nice rest stop.

Keep in mind that opening hours can vary depending on the season, especially early or late in the hiking season, so it’s always good to bring some water and snacks just in case.

Trail difficulty

Overall, we’d describe the Sass de Putia loop as a moderate hike. It’s not technically difficult, but there is one section that requires a bit of effort and attention.

Most of the trail is very manageable. Large parts of the route follow wide gravel paths and gentle alpine trails, making it comfortable to walk and easy to navigate.

The elevation gain is concentrated mainly in one section — the climb to Forcella de Putia.

Sass De Putia Hike Dolomites

This part is the most demanding. The trail becomes steeper, narrower in places, and there are a few sections with drop-offs along the side of the path. Nothing extreme, but it does require steady footing and a basic head for heights.

Once you reach Forcella de Putia, the hike becomes much easier again. The rest of the route mostly descends gradually or stays relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without too much effort.

In our experience, this hike is a great option if you want a rewarding Dolomites trail with big views but without a full-day, exhausting climb. Anyone with decent fitness and some hiking experience should be able to complete it comfortably.

FAQs

Parts of the hike are family-friendly, especially the easier sections near Passo delle Erbe and Fornella Hut. However, the climb to Forcella de Putia includes narrow paths with drop-offs, so it’s better suited for older children with hiking experience rather than very young kids.

Yes, if you have basic hiking fitness. The trail itself is well-marked and mostly follows clear paths.
