Krabi is a surprisingly diverse area of Thailand, and not many people realize that before they visit. There’s Krabi Town, full of local culture and great as a transit point, lively Ao Nang with beaches and parties, isolated Railay Beach that feels adventurous and remote, and a few more corners that each have their own unique vibe.

We spent most of our time in Railay and Krabi Town, and only visited Ao Nang briefly — but even that short stop was enough to see how different these places really are.

What we quickly understood is that choosing the right base for your trip makes a huge difference, especially since it’s not that easy to travel between the main areas once you’re there.

In this guide, we’ll go through the best areas to stay in Krabi and share our handpicked hotels — places we’ve either stayed ourselves or wouldn’t hesitate to book on our next visit.

Where to stay in Krabi: Our experience

When we first started planning our trip, we honestly had no idea how spread out it really is. On the map, everything looks close — but once you’re there, getting from one area to another can take time (and a few longtail rides). That’s why picking the right base makes such a difference.

We chose to split our stay between Railay and Krabi Town, which turned out to be a great mix.

Railay was the kind of place that makes you slow down — no cars, just paths through the jungle, dramatic cliffs, and beaches that feel cut off from the world. It’s peaceful, but also a bit isolated; once the last boats leave, it’s just you, the sound of waves, and a few beach bars still open under the stars.

Railay Beach in Krabi

Krabi Town, on the other hand, gave us a completely different vibe. It’s not right by the beach, but we loved the night markets, local cafés, and the easy access to day trips and boats to other islands.

We stopped by Ao Nang only for a short visit — and while it’s convenient and lively, it felt a bit too busy for our taste. Still, we can see why it’s popular if you like nightlife and easy access to nearby islands.

One thing we learned? This isn’t a place where you can easily move around between beaches — so it’s better to pick one area that fits your style instead of trying to see them all.

Here’s what we learned about each area — and the best hotels we’d recommend if you’re planning your own stay.

Railay Beach in Krabi

Best areas to stay in Krabi

Each part has its own personality — from lively beach towns to quiet, off-grid corners that feel like a different world altogether.

Before diving into details, here’s a quick map to help you see how the main areas are spread out and how far they are from each other. It really helps to get a sense of distance before deciding where to base yourself.

Railay Beach

Tucked between dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise water, Railay Beach sits on a small peninsula that’s only accessible by boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. The moment we arrived, it felt like we’d landed on an isolated island — no cars, just sandy paths, jungle trails, and the sound of longtail boats echoing in the distance.

We stayed a few nights here and honestly loved how time seemed to slow down. Our favorite part was the mornings and sunsets at Phra Nang Beach, when all the day trippers had gone and the area calmed down.

We also had a lot of fun when climbing up the adventurous path to East Railay Viewpoint.

Railay Beach in Krabi

There are a few small cafés and beach bars, but not much nightlife — which is exactly why we liked it. If you visit, bring cash and repellent — ATMs and convenience stores are limited. And once the last boats leave, it’s just you and the cliffs.

✅ Pros: Unreal scenery, peaceful vibe, no traffic
❌ Cons: Limited access, higher prices for supplies
⭐️ Best for: Couples and anyone who wants that remote, island-style escape

If you’re planning your trip, here’s our complete guide on how to get from Krabi to Railay.

Railay Beach in Krabi

Ao Nang

Ao Nang is the main tourist hub, just a short drive from Krabi Town and the easiest place to catch boats to nearby islands like Railay, Hong, or Phi Phi and the famous Maya Bay. It’s lively, colorful, and busy from morning until late at night.

We only visited Ao Nang for a short time, but it was enough to feel its energy. The main street is packed with restaurants, shops, and bars, while the beach itself is long and good for evening walks rather than swimming.

Railay Beach in Krabi

It’s convenient, yes — but also quite commercial and crowded, especially during high season. If you like being close to everything and don’t mind a bit of noise, this is the most practical base.

✅ Pros: Great location, tons of food options, easy island access
❌ Cons: Crowded, touristy, beach not ideal for swimming
⭐️ Best for: First-time visitors and travelers who want convenience over quiet

Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi

Krabi Town

Located about 25 minutes inland from Ao Nang, Krabi Town feels like a completely different world compared to the beach areas. There’s no sand or sea here, but it makes up for it with authentic local life, night markets, and a calm, everyday atmosphere.

We stayed here for a few nights and really enjoyed seeing this side of the destination. It’s a great base if you want to explore nearby attractions like Tiger Cave Temple, Emerald Pool, or even take a longtail to Railay.

The town itself is easy to walk around, full of small cafés, local restaurants, and riverside viewpoints that come alive in the evenings.

Tiger Cave Temple Krabi

It’s not the prettiest place, but it’s real — and that’s what makes it interesting. We’d say staying for one or two nights is just enough to see the main attractions and then move on to one of the beach destinations.

✅ Pros: Affordable, local vibe, great food and markets
❌ Cons: No beach, not ideal for long beach stays
⭐️ Best for: Budget travelers and anyone wanting a taste of local life

Klong Muang

About 20 minutes north of Ao Nang, Klong Muang feels like a completely different side of Krabi — quieter, cleaner, and far more relaxed. The beach here is long and peaceful, with calm water and just enough restaurants and cafés to make it comfortable without feeling busy.

Most of the resorts sit right by the beach, so you can walk straight from your room to the sea. It’s the kind of place where you actually hear the waves instead of motorbikes.

Railay Beach in Krabi

If you’re looking for nightlife or easy transport, you’ll need to head back toward Ao Nang — but that’s a small trade-off for the space and calm you get here. Just rent a scooter or arrange transfers in advance, as taxis can be pricey.

✅ Pros: Quiet, beautiful beach, great mid-range and luxury hotels
❌ Cons: Limited nightlife, higher transport costs
⭐️ Best for: Couples and families wanting a calm, beachside escape
