Where to Stay in Phuket: Our Experience
When we planned our trip to Phuket, we really wanted to see more than just one beach. So instead of booking one hotel for the whole stay, we moved around quite a bit — from the town to the coast and back again.
Based on our own experience, Phuket is surprisingly diverse. Each area has its own personality — some are lively and full of nightlife, others quiet and local — so choosing where to stay really depends on the kind of trip you’re after.
We arrived from Phi Phi and started our journey in Phuket Old Town. It turned out to be a great spot for a short cultural stop — full of colorful streets, street art, local markets, and charming cafes. But honestly, we wouldn’t stay here too long.
It’s lovely for a night or even just a day trip, but it’s quite far from all the main beaches, so it’s not ideal as a base for a longer beach holiday.
From there, we moved on to the Kata / Kata Noi area, which quickly became one of our favorites. The beaches are beautiful, the vibe is calm, and there’s plenty of holiday energy without feeling chaotic.
That said, it’s definitely more touristy — menus in Russian are everywhere (Kata is very popular among Russian travelers), and there are lots of souvenir shops.
We didn’t stay directly at Karon Beach, but we spent a lot of time there, and it felt quite similar to Kata — calm, family-friendly, and a little more spacious. It’s ideal if you want a peaceful stay with everything you need nearby, but still close enough to Patong if you ever want a livelier night out.
Then came Patong Beach, and… wow, what a contrast. It’s loud, colorful, and full of energy. The nightlife is wild, and the streets are buzzing from early evening until late at night. If you’re backpacking, traveling solo, or just looking for the most action-packed base, Patong is definitely it.
After a few nights in Patong, we wanted something more laid-back, so we checked out Kamala Beach. This one surprised us in the best way — still close enough to Patong for day trips, but with a much calmer, more local feel.
The beach is wide and peaceful, with just enough cafes, beach bars, and small resorts to make it comfortable without feeling crowded. We really liked it here for lazy afternoons and sunset walks.
Lastly, we explored Bang Tao Beach, which turned out to be one of the most convenient areas if you’re flying in or out — it’s the closest major beach area to Phuket Airport. The beach itself is long and quiet, lined with upscale resorts and relaxed beach clubs.
Each place showed us a different face of the island — from cultural corners and busy nightlife to peaceful stretches of sand. Here’s what we learned about each area, and how to pick the one that fits you best.
Best Areas to Stay in Phuket
Patong Beach
Located on Phuket’s west coast, Patong Beach is the island’s most famous — and by far its liveliest — area. It’s around 40 minutes from the airport and sits between Kamala and Karon, making it super convenient if you want to explore other beaches nearby.
We stayed here for a couple of nights to see what all the hype was about, and honestly, that was just right. Patong is loud, busy, and full of life — music, lights, and people everywhere.
The beach is long and easy to access, though it’s usually crowded with jet skis and vendors. It’s not the calmest spot for swimming.
At night, the area completely transforms. Bangla Road becomes one big party street with bars, lights, and a non-stop buzz. Our favorite spot was Illuzion Phuket — an incredible nightclub with dancers, performers, and international DJs.
Celebrities often perform here, and it’s easily one of the best nightlife venues in Thailand.
If you stay here, pick a hotel a few streets back or uphill near Patong Bay to escape the noise.

We stayed here before Patong, and it was a huge difference — soft sand, clear water, and a peaceful vibe. Kata has more restaurants and shops, while Kata Noi feels quieter and a bit more upscale. Both are great for swimming and sunset walks.
Our top food tip: eat at Eightfold Restaurant — hands down the best Thai food we had in the area. Try their green curry or pad thai; they’re incredible.

We didn’t stay directly here but spent plenty of time exploring, and it felt like the perfect middle ground between lively Patong and quieter Kata. The beach is beautiful, great for swimming, and ideal if you enjoy long walks by the sea without bumping into too many people.
There are enough restaurants, cafes, and small bars along the main road to keep things interesting, though nightlife is limited compared to Patong. It’s also easy to get around by tuk-tuk or scooter, with Kata just a few minutes away.

Still, there are also small local cafes and beach bars that keep it from feeling too exclusive.

Kamala still has a local feel, with small markets, casual restaurants, and friendly vendors. For something livelier, the famous Café del Mar Phuket sits at the northern end, offering beach club vibes with music and cocktails, but it never feels overwhelming.

We stayed here for one night after arriving from Phi Phi, and it was the perfect way to see a different side of Phuket. The town is full of charm — colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, local markets, and cozy cafes on every corner.
Walking down Thalang Road in the evening was one of our favorite moments; the mix of street food stalls, lights, and live music gave it such a warm, local feel.
Phuket Old Town is ideal for wandering, eating, and soaking in culture. Don’t miss the Sunday Walking Street Market, where you can try everything from grilled seafood to handmade crafts.
That said, it’s not the best base if your main goal is the beach — most of the coastline is 30–40 minutes away. We’d recommend it more as a cultural stopover or a short city break between island-hopping day.
